5-year-old Saroo and his brother search their village in India for casual work to help support their mother. After a catastrophic accident, Saroo, finds himself alone on a train taking him to Kolkata. He survives living on the streets, before ending up in an orphanage from which he is adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, Saroo is a self-assured young man, and in love with fellow student Lucy (Rooney Mara). His longing to find the world from his past is aided by technological development: Google Earth.

Based on a true story, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) who plays the adult Saroo, and Nicole Kidman (his adoptive mother) were nominated for best Supporting Actor and Actress but Sunny Pawar steals the show as the young Saroo.
