On Wednesday 26th September the U3A Vall del Pop Wine Tasting group had their first tasting of the season at the Black Apple Bistro in Jalon, which intriguingly shares the premises with the florist “Heidi’s Flowers”. As the weather was showery our tables were set amongst the beautiful flowers. 31 members attended. A lively night at a new venue for us.
That evening Sommelier Jorge, from Orba, presented the wines in a friendly and informative way assisted by Rachel and Natalia, from Black Apple, who translated where necessary and served the wine. The group were offered six wines:
Vino Monasterio de Palazuelos Verdejo-Viura
Grapes: Verdejo, Viura
Bodega: Hijos de Alberto Gutierrez, Rueda
This is the house wine.
Angosto Blanco
Grapes: 25% Moscatel, 25% Verdejo, 25% Sauvignon blanc, 25% Chardonnay.
Bodega: El Angosto, Ontinyent, Valencia.
Castillo Monjardin de Lágrima, rosado
Grapes: 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 % Garnacha.
Bodega: Castillo de Monjardin, Navarra
A blush rosado that only needs 2 months of fermentation
Peregrino, rosado
Grapes: 100% Prieto Picudo
Bodega: Gordonzello, Leon
Hello World Cabernet Franc, tinto
Grape: 100% Cabernet Franc
Bodega: Finca La Estacada, Cuenca
Lacrimus 5, tinto
Grape: 100% Tempraniilo
Bodega: Rodríguez Sanzo, Rioja
Matured for 5 months in American Oak, which has had incisions
made in it to hasten the fermentation.
The food, created by Tom, Heidi’s son, was served on Lazy Susan platters and featured a large selection of cheeses, cold meats (including a house-cooked ham), a uniquely flavoured scotch egg, house-made chutney and freshly baked bread.
