Our first day out at long last.
What a wonderful day we had on Wednesday 6th October when a number of U3A Vall del Pop members visited Guadalest and Altea. Of course we all had to follow the safety restrictions and we limited our coach numbers to 30 members, who all agreed that this helped them to feel safe.
The U3A Vall Del Pop, Ladies at Lunch kicked off the new season with a visit to Aromas, Lliber, on Tuesday, 21st September 2021.
On October 7th our General Assembly will be held once again back at the Polivalent , Murla. Doors open at 10:00am and after the Association business John Hopwood will talk about “The history of Woolworths and their family”.
As a brief introduction I would outline that Frank Winfield Woolworth had humble beginnings, being born on a small farm in Watertown New York State. He opened his first store in the US in 1879 and 33 years later Woolworths was incorporated, raising 65 million dollars – in today’s money 1.75 billion - half of that went to Frank. In 1909 he opened his first UK store in Liverpool. At the height of the UK business there were more than 1,700 stores and more than 5,000 throughout the world.
In 1913 he commissioned the Woolworth building – the then tallest building in the world - which he paid for in cash! It sounds as if we are in for a very interesting talk about a retail empire before Amazon!
With the further relaxation of restrictions, on the size of social gatherings, the Vall del Pop U3A are very pleased to be able to announce that Murla Ayuntamiento has given permission for our future General Assemblies to be held again in their Polivalent hall. So please be sure to attend our ‘Coming Home’ GA on Thursday 7th October, when John Hopwood will be presenting a talk on the history of Woolworths and the Woolworth family.
Our normal walking programme is from October to May, and we take a break during the hotter summer months. However last year we offered a shorter summer walk each week during June and September. They proved popular and we are doing the same again this year.
Jacintha held a stretching session at El Cid on the Monday before Christmas.
She raised €160 which she donated to the Goodwill Team.
These funds will be presented to nominated charities later in the year.
